Supreme Court Orders Old N200, N500, N1,000 Notes To Remain In Circulation Till.....

The Supreme Court on Friday ordered that old N200, N500, N1,000 notes remain in circulation till December 31, 2023.

The apex court also nullified the Federal Government’s naira redesign policy, declaring it as an affront to the 1999 Constitution.

Justice Emmanuel Agim, who read the lead judgement, held that the preliminary objections by the defendants (the Attorney General of the Federation, Bayelsa and Edo states) are dismissed as the court has the jurisdiction to entertain the suit.

Citing Section 23(2)1 of the constitution, the court held that the dispute between the FederaL Government and states must involve law or facts.

The apex court further held that President Muhammadu Buhari in his broadcast admitted that the policy is flawed with a lot of challenges.

IT’S OFFICIAL: INEC declares Tinubu winner of presidential election

Bola Tinubu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been declared the winner of 2023 presidential election.

Mahmood Yakubu, chairperson of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), announced the results in the early hours of Wednesday 1st of March, 2023.

Yakubu said Tinubu secured a total of 8,794,726 votes.

Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had the second-highest figure with 6,984,520 votes, while Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) was next with 6,101,533 votes.

“I now perform my responsibility as chief returning officer of the federation,” the INEC chair said.

“I, professor Mahmood Yakubu, hereby certify that I am the returning officer for the 2023 general election. The election was contested.

“That Tinubu Bola Ahmed of the APC, having certified the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned.”

Yakubu added that the issuance of the certificate of return to Tinubu will take place at 3pm on Wednesday.

NAICOM - Insurance Assets hits Trillion.

Nigeria’s insurance industry’s total assets grew to about N2.3 trillion in the second quarter of 2022, indicating an increased growth rate of 11.9 per cent over the first quarter. The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) made this known during the week in a bulletin on Insurance Market Performance made available by its spokesman, Rasaaq Salami.

Gross premium income in the second quarter of 2022 stood at N369.2.8billion, a notable performance indicating a 20.1per cent growth rate compared to the same period of the previous year and an impressive 65.0per cent, quarter on quarter. The continued steady growth from the first quarter of the year correlates with the current performance of the period under review.

The market data reveals that the industry grew 20.1% higher than the national real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of 3.5% during the same period. This indicates the industry’s impressive performance given the recent trajectory. Proportional participation of each class of business is provided for in Chart 1, suggesting the continued improvement of the life Insurance business as driven by its component of the Individual Life.

According to his statement, the industry’s financial position indicated a total of N1.2 trillion in assets in Non-Life Insurance while Life Insurance stood at about N1.1trillion, while the insured recorded gross claims of N174.8 billion in the second quarter of the year, representing 47.3 per cent of premiums collected during the period.

It noted that gross claims made in the second quarter of the year indicated a 0.2 per cent growth compared to the corresponding period of 2021, which reflects the professional underwriting capacity of the industry driven by the intensified regulatory activities of the commission,’’ the report stated. The market report indicated that net claims paid were N148.2billion, signifying 84.8 per cent of claims made during the period.

Lagos State, STANBIC IBTC BANK EMPOWER YOUTHS WITH POS MACHINES

The Lagos State Government, in cooperation with Stanbic IBTC Bank, has empowered hundreds of unemployed youths with Point of Sales (POS) machines, especially those who are determined to pursue a legitimate source of income in the state.

Hon. (Mrs). Yetunde Arobieke, Commissioner, Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employmen at distribution ceremony to some unemployed in the State said the initiative originated from the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu on the efforts to achieve financial transformation for the youths.

She stated that the empowerment focus is specifically targeted at those who are yearning to earn a source of living through legitimate means that will give them rest of mind, based on their jobs.

Her words: “There is no doubt that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is a youth-centric Governor who understands where the shoe pinches millions of Lagos youths and this explains why he is always ready to give his consent and approval to any programme that is youth-focused”.

The Commissioner, Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employmen appreciated Stanbic IBTC for sharing in the ‘Greater Lagos Vision’ of the State Government to fight the scourge of unemployment, stressing that the gesture will help alleviate the sufferings of the beneficiaries.

The Commissioner urged the beneficiaries of the POS Machines to make the best use of the opportunity, saying “You all have to consider the fact that you have been given a rare opportunity which, if properly utilised would lead to a complete transformation of your entire lives”.

House Committee on Insurance & Actuarial Matter held a three (3) days Retreat for Consolidated Insurance Bill,2020.

All stakeholders that formed Technical Committee came together to review various positions submitted. The event took place on 3rd - 5th March @ Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.

The event was declared open by the Rt Hon. Elumelu the Minority Leader of House of Representatives. While Rt Hon Darlington Nwokocha is the Chairman House Committee on Insurance and Actuarial Matters that preside over the Retreat.

All the stakeholders were invited to speak to the suggestion and position presented at the December 2020, Public Hearing.

Been a legislative procedure for a bill to be passed in accordance to the Constitution, the Retreat was largely successful.

The Bill is going to give birth to a new insurance industry when it finally passed.

The Commissioner for Insurance gave words of appreciation to the technical committee and others who were present.

President Muhammadu Buhari approves compulsory health insurance for corps members

The Nigeria President, Muhammadu Buhari, has given directives for the enrollment of serving corps members into the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Brigadier-General Shuaibu Ibrahim, the director-general of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) announced this, during a media chat in Abuja, he said the scheme has finalised plans with the NHIS in line with the presidential directive.

The NYSC DG noted that with over 300,000 corps members mobilised nationwide per annum, the scheme remains a solid ground to breed future leaders and "drivers of national unity and development.”

He said

“I wish to use this opportunity to again express our gratitude to the security agencies and other stakeholders for their support.

"Furthermore, the scheme has concluded arrangement with the NHIS for the enrolment of corps members into the NHIS in line with a presidential directive. We have also expended huge resources on critical health needs of corps members, including footing of medical bills.”

Joe Biden won the US Presidential election, after getting over 270 electoral votes needed to win the race as the 46th US President.

In the United State of America, All the presidential candidates usually have agenda of things they plan to accomplish on the very first day of their presidency.

Below are some of the things on his to-do list

1. Tackle coronavirus head on

Biden has promised to reach out Dr. Anthony Fauci, the country’s top infectious disease specialist, for advice on how to combat the pandemic which has claimed over 200,000 lives in the US.

On his Twitter handle, he said

"We cannot repair the economy, restore our vitality, or relish life’s most precious moments — hugging a grandchild, birthdays, weddings, graduations, all the moments that matter most to us — until we get this virus under control."

2. Rejoin the WHO

President Donald Trump had on July 7 announced that he was withdrawing the US from the World Health Organization (WHO).

His reason being that the world body was biased towards China which he believes is to blame for the coronavirus pandemic.

That same day, Joe Biden vowed to reverse that decision on his first day as president.

3. Start repairing the US’ reputation

Biden earlier promised that on Day One he’ll reassure the US’s allies that “we’re back and you can count on us again.”

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will be glad to welcome the US back into the fold

4. Rejoin the Paris climate accord

The US officially left the Paris climate agreement on November 4 which took a while for Trump to finalise.

On Day One or soon after he is sworn in, Biden could submit a notice to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change that the US intends to reenter the agreement.

5. Keep more fossil fuels in the ground

In a July 14 speech, Biden promised that if elected, he would “reverse Trump’s rollbacks of 100 public health and environmental rules,” many accomplished (and easily undone) by no-fuss executive orders.

6. Bring back transgender students’ rights

Obama's education department issued guidance that required any school receiving funds from the federal government to extend protections to transgender students in May 2016 but this was reoked by Trump and education secretary, Betsy DeVos.

Biden says those protections will be reinstated on his first day in office.

7. End the ban on Muslim countries

One of Trump's first acts, when he became president, was to restrict travelers from six Muslim-majority countries.

Biden said it was “vile” for Trump to ban entry to the US from several predominately Muslim countries during a speech in July and promised to overturn the restrictions on his first day.

8. Remove restrictions on union workers

Restrictions on federal workers unions imposed by Trump, including limiting the time workers can spend on union business will be eliminated by Biden.

Meanwhile, Biden is full of gratitude to the American people for choosing him to be their next leader. He sent a message to all who voted for him, saying "thank you from the bottom of my heart".

In a series of tweets on his official Twitter handle, he called on everyone to join hands with him in making America great again.

More than 1M Youths in Nigeria have applied for the 75 Billion (NYIF) - President Buhari

The President of Nigeria, Muhammad Buhari, has announced on Sunday night, 1st of November, 2020 on Twitter that more than one (1) million Nigerian Youths have already participated by applying for the 75 Billion Naira Nigeria Youth Investment Fund (NYIF).

The President, in his statement, said the portal was launched on the 12th of October, 2020.

The (NYIF) Will be used to help the youths, focusing on their innovative ideas, talents and skills.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) national leader, Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu, has paid a support visit to the Governor of Lagos state, Babjide Sanwo-Olu.

This happened on Saturday, 24th of October, 2020, at the Marina State House, Lagos State.

Tinubu denied the social media rumours that he orchestrated Lekki Toll gate attacks to the peaceful protesters, then traveled out of the country. #ENDSARS

The formal Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu said he didn’t go nowhere, that he is a Lagosian and he still holds the title of Asiwaju of Lagos and still a Jagaban.

He went further and said "Whatever they think. Fake news is all over the place. They say Seyi my son was kidnapped and was chased but look at him. I didn’t pay a penny to bring him here."
